Take heed! To ensure a successful waxing experience for your clients, please be mindful of the following guidelines:

Avoid sun exposure before and after a wax procedure as skin sensitivity is enhanced by UV rays and subject to burn
Only wax intact skins
Avoid wax procedures on irritated , broken, or sun-burned skins
Avoid wax procedures on moles, warts, distended capillaries, nipples, eyelashes
Do not wax clients who are insulin-dependent diabetics, or using certain medications that would render their skins more sensitive to epilation procedures
Do NOT wax clients using Accutane or any prescription Acne Medication. Wait 3 months after last dosage to provide epilation services
Do Not wax clients immediately before or after a chemical peel, microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing. Wait 1 week to 3 months depending on the depth of the exfoliation method
Beware of clients using high percentages of Alpha-Hydroxy Acids or Retinoic Acids. Client should stop using products 1 week prior to epilation services. Do a patch test
Do Not lip wax clients with an outbreak of Herpes Simplex or Fever Blisters
DO NOT use wax products that are too hot for the skin. Wax should be approximately skin temperature for best results. All Epillyss waxes are applied at near body temperature
Always test wax on your own inner arm prior to application on the client

Salut Mon Aestheticians! This month we will talk about men... A wonderful subject... Oui!

Waxing is a high profit, low overhead service, with a strong repeat component. Even in a challenging economy, a clients desire for these services is high. Why do clients wax? We know why women wax: to make themselves more attractive, to feel better about themselves, to feel ‘clean’, to wear a bathing suit comfortably, to feel sexy. Why do men wax?

A man’s primary reason for waxing is body image. Over the years, men’s perception of what masculinity is has changed from being hairy to being hairless. What has been responsible for this about face? The media, of course. Men read magazines and follow their advice just like women do. Maxim, Stuff, FHM represent several popular male magazines that have virtually revolutionized the messages to which men are exposed, emphasizing the importance of highly muscular and expensively groomed bodies (Hatoum & Belle 2004).

Male oriented publications promote diet, exercise, skin care, dietary supplements, greater muscularity and hair removal. Research reports the average male magazine reader used an average of 2 beauty products per month, including cologne, hair gel, manicures, and body waxing (Hatoum & Belle 2004). This new ‘well-groomed man’ is better known as a Metrosexual (not to be confused with homosexual). Metrosexual, a term coined by Simpson (Simpson 2002), describes a fashion-conscious, urban, heterosexual who has a strong aesthetic sense and a desire to spend time and money to enhance their appearance and lifestyle.

There are Metrosexuals in your salons and spas everyday; getting manicures, pedicures, massages, haircuts, etc. Are they your waxing clients? Does your menu highlight men's waxing as a separate service category? An effective menu has a men's section listing all the services you provide for men. Don't assume men understand that all services are unisex. A separate men's menu sends a clear message that your facility caters to a man's unique needs and sensitivities, understanding that privacy is paramount. Your menu is most effectively presented in clear language, not 'spa language.' List all the areas of the body waxed and the prices per area.

An example - ½ leg wax - knees down to ankles: $45.00, knees up to groin: $55.00. If you plan to offer men’s bikini or brazilian wax, be clear about how much is waxed and the price. Additionally, list the areas not waxed to avoid confusion. Men are often shy about asking about waxing services, especially on the phone. A successful mens waxing program makes the experience easy, pleasant and safe for a man to book the service understanding what to expect and knowing he will be treated professionally. Development of a male waxing business requires a thoughtful process to ensure success.

Why is hair removal so important to men? After waxing, a man will feel cleaner, sexier, with more defined muscularity. Generally, men feel better about themselves - they have a better body image. In fact, in their research, Boroughs & Thompson (2002), found that appearance concerns motivate men to remove their hair from their bodies, especially abdomen, chest, groin, and legs. They go on to suggest body hair removal is indeed a new and potentially important component of body image for men.
